Diamond Colour

The colour of the diamond is one of the most important of the 4 c`s and is one of the key factors to be considered when determining the value of a diamond.
The ideal colour is actually the absence of all body colour the exception being the natural fancy colour diamonds, such as yellow, pink, blue, green, purple, brown, black and the very rare red.
A very precise scale of colour grading, as defined by the GIA ( Gemmological Institute of America ), is used  universally today in the diamond trade.

Colour grading begins with the letter D and this is the rarest and  the most desirable of the colourless diamonds and finishes with the letter Z which will be a tint of yellow or brown. After the letter Z the diamonds enter into what is known as the fancy colours and can be seen in all shades of the above colours.
The only true way of determining a diamonds colour is by comparison to Master Stones which are the standard  bench mark, also needed is a  white light, and an environment where the grading room is in  a neutral colour.
Last but not least is the experienced diamond grader who will be able to check the colour.

Grading of a mounted stone is harder because the colour can be influenced by the colour of the mount, such things as coloured stones around the diamond or the yellow of the gold mount can influence the diamonds colour.
In a mount the diamonds colour has to be estimated and this is, of course, down to the expertise of the grader.

Never be put off by a diamond that is tinted because it may have  excellent clarity and be worth more than a diamond that is colourless but of poor clarity.
